Stop Gender Discrimination! campaign. Info session. Women’s Rights. Legislation and Activism.

The “Women’s Rights, Legislation and Activism” info session took place Tuesday, June 22, in a limited meeting (unfortunately, the number of participants decreased from previous sessions to ten people). During the campaign’s planning process, the info session on rights was conceived as the strong point of this campaign, because it was meant not only to inform women and men of their rights, but also to exemplify how these rights are violated and which institutions and organizations are capable of intervention.
The session revealed that the individuals do know their rights, but they do not know the related mechanisms of protection and promotion, and they do not know which institutions address situations of discrimination, domestic violence or sexual harassment. In this context, the Romanian legislation on equal opportunities and anti-discrimination is not acknowledged by the general public, also shown by interviews and focus groups conducted in Turda (March, May). Although they did not know about the existence of specific institutions such as The National Agency for Equal Opportunities between Women and Men (ANES) or the National Council for Combating Discrimination (CNCD), the participants revealed a high level of uncertainty regarding public institutions and authorities.
I am pleased that the info session reached its aim and the participants were given a clear image of their rights and how to protect those rights. The proposals offered by the participants for informing citizens of their rights were excellent, and they will be taken into consideration for future activities.
As a result of the feedback, CRD will organize more frequent and consistent info sessions on citizens’ rights and liberties.
Thank you and see you on Tuesday at the movie screening “Red Poppies”!
