Stop Gender Discrimination Campaign. Movie screening on 18th of June 2010

Friday, June 18th, the CRD hall hosted a screening of the "Tough Guise. Media, Violence & the Crisis in Masculinity" documentary. The movie screening was the second activity organized during “Stop Gender Discrimination!” awareness and info campaign on gender equality.
Despite a warm, sunny day, at about 16.50 (with about an hour before the movie screening) the weather quickly turned stormy. Concerns about how to reprogram the activity vanished when participants started to arrive anyway. The majority of participants were adolescent boys who had come to see a documentary covering the ways in which masculinity is constructed at the intersection of norms and social impositions, entourage, movies, games, music (through constructed images of masculinity).
The documentary lasted 55 minutes, but the pre and post screening discussions lasted approximately one and half hours. If before the movie, participants stated that a man is naturally a strong, independent, protective, bread winner, after watching the movie, the participants completely changed course, agreeing upon common characteristics of both men and women, and that the above mentioned factors are influencing our gender identities. The discussion also focused on masculinity and femininity images presented through music, Romanian movies and TV shows; the participants agreed that the pattern identified in Tough Guise is extremely relevant to Romania.

I would like to thank the participants for their interest and enthusiasm!
